Landscapes of Love Landscapes of Love
There are always inner forces at work in our relationships, and it is our inner (psychological) landscapes that determine in many cases how we relate and with whom.

I was recently fortunate enough to complete my Usui  Reiki Level  One Practioner.  Previously, my impressions of reiki were quite mixed. I grew up feeling very skeptical about the practice. I thought it was silly and weird and did not believe that the power of touch could be so profound.

My mother had suffered from thyroid cancer and she would have sporadic visits from a group of ladies who came into our house to do reiki work on her as part of her healing regimen. I had no idea what went on behind the closed doors and I wanted to keep it that way. I simply did not believe.

As my mother recovered from cancer and continued her journey through reiki, I would sometimes see her working on friends and family members …even at times our dog. Everyone seemed to love it and rave about how relaxed they would feel after treatments. I always tried to run away from it and did not let my mom work on me.

I showed no interest in reiki until years later when I found it creeping into my own life. After having encountered some overpowering energies in a deep meditation I sought refuge in reiki to find balance. It was the only thing that seemed to work for finding a sense of grounding. I left my first reiki session feeling stronger, calmer and more peaceful then I had in months. No matter how much yoga, meditation or massage I did, nothing brought me back to balance as effectively as the reiki did.

To honour the practice of reiki and to celebrate the holidays, my mother, sister and I all gave each other the gift of reiki. Getting attuned together strengthened our bond and made for an amazing day of self-discovery, healing and learning.

Although there are many different types of reiki, the practice began  from  the system developed by Mikao Usui.  Usui was a 19th Century Christian Monk who began his journey of reiki after being asked by students to show the healing techniques of Jesus Christ. After not being able to answer the queries of his students he began studying the holy writings in India including the Sanskrit Buddhist Sutras. After a 21 day fast and meditation the answers came to him in the symbols of reiki.

In Japanese, “rei” means universal spirit and “ki” means life force energy. Reiki works on a physical, mental, spiritual and emotional level. It is passed on through a system of attunement where a reiki master places the reiki symbols into the students’ body which enables access to the energy. The energy does not come from the student but from “the source”-which is said to be the greater power of the universe or God.

Reiki is very much based on the intention of the practionner and is fed by LOVE. Although the energy is mainly transmitted through the direct touch of the hands it may also be transmitted through beaming as well as long distance transmission.  Although there are guides to the practice of reiki it is greatly based on intuition.

Reiki is first and foremost about healing the practioner. However, the benefits of reiki move further enabling practioners to heal others, animals, plants, their food, water and their environments.

Reiki is a beautiful practice of natural healing that can bring us back to wholeness and give us an energetic balance that we are yearning for. It is simple and can be accessed anywhere and by anyone who has received the attunement.
